The world's largest retailer needed to understand how mobility was changing. From electric vehicles to flying cars, from hydrogen to synthetic fuels - the future of transport looked complex and unclear. Their 2,500+ auto centers faced disruption from every direction. Leaders needed a clear map to make confident bets on the future.
Task
I was tasked with creating a comprehensive Map of the Decade that would guide leaders through mobility's transformation, showing how key forces will reshape both transport and retail over the next ten years.
The generated Map of the Future is a visual tool that highlights the intersections of these key drivers and future scenarios, guiding businesses through strategic decisions as mobility evolves. This foresight model helps anticipate challenges and opportunities for Walmart’s Auto Care Centers and their expansion into future mobility services, allowing them to align with sustainability and customer-driven innovations.
We turned complex signals into a clear map for action through three main steps
Found the Big Shifts
Identified seven key drivers: Alternative Fuels, Connected Platforms, Future Form Factors, Mobility for All, Services Extended, Roadtrips Reimagined, and Geopolitical Risks
Built detailed analysis of each driver
Created clear maps showing how they connect
Built Future Scenarios
Developed four detailed scenarios: Growth (Electrified Evolution), Constraint (Mixed Momentum), Collapse (Grid Dependency), and Transform (Merged Commerce)
Used scenario planning to stress test current objectives
